Journaling Through the Bible with SOAPS

By Meridith Curtis

Journaling Through the Bible with SOAPS

If you've ever opened your Bible with the best of intentions only to close it again a few minutes later—overwhelmed, distracted, or unsure where to start—you're not alone. Scripture is powerful and life-giving, but without structure, even the most devoted reader can feel lost.

That's where the SOAPS Bible journaling method comes in. Whether you're a seasoned believer or new to Bible study, SOAPS offers a practical, heartfelt, and focused approach to hearing God's voice and reflecting on His Word daily.

In this post, I'll share:

  • What SOAPS stands for

  • Why journaling with SOAPS transforms your time with God

  • Templates you can use (printable or digital)

  • Tips to stay consistent and make the most of it

📝 What Is SOAPS?

SOAPS is an acronym that stands for:

  • S – Scripture
Choose one verse (or a few) that stands out in your reading.

  • O – Observation
What is happening in the passage? Who is speaking? What's the context?

  • A – Application
How does this apply to your life? What can you learn or change?

  • P – Prayer
Write a short prayer in response to what you've read.

  • S – Sharing
Share what you've learned—whether with a friend, small group, online, or simply recorded for your future self.

This final "S" helps turn private reflection into community encouragement. When we share what God is teaching us, it often blesses others in ways we don't expect—and helps us retain the lesson ourselves.

🌿 Why Use the SOAPS Method?

Here's why this journaling structure can be a spiritual game-changer:

  • Clarity: It keeps your focus on one main idea rather than skimming through large chunks of text without reflection.

  • Consistency: A repeatable structure makes it easier to stay in the Word daily.

  • Depth: You'll begin to notice patterns, personal applications, and God's voice with more clarity.

  • Connection: Sharing what you learn invites others into your spiritual journey and builds community.

📔 SOAPS Bible Journaling Template

You can use this as a daily page in a physical journal or in a digital notebook like Notion, Evernote, or GoodNotes.

📖 SCRIPTURE
Write out a verse (or short passage) that stands out from your daily reading.
Example: "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7)

👁️ OBSERVATION
Note what you observe in the text. Consider historical context, key words, and themes.
Example: Peter is writing to Christians facing suffering. He reminds them that God is not distant—He cares deeply.

💡 APPLICATION
How does this truth affect your life today?
Example: I've been carrying stress I haven't surrendered to God. I need to actively "cast" my cares on Him in prayer, trusting He truly cares.

🙏 PRAYER
Write a personal, honest prayer.
Example: Lord, thank You for being a God who cares. Help me give You the burdens I keep holding onto. I trust You.

📣 SHARING
Reflect on how you can share what you learned today.
Example: I'm going to text this verse to a friend who's going through a hard time. It encouraged me, and I think it will encourage her too.

💡 Tips to Stay Consistent

  1. Set a dedicated time and space. Morning works best for many, but find what's realistic for you.

  2. Use a physical journal or favorite app. If you're artistic, decorate the pages with stickers, colors, or hand lettering.

  3. Start small. Don't worry about writing an essay each day. Some of the most powerful SOAPS entries are just a few lines.

  4. Join a reading plan. Try reading through one book of the Bible at a time or use a topical plan (faith, anxiety, wisdom, etc.).

  5. Pair it with worship. Before you begin, play a worship song to quiet your mind.

  6. Give yourself grace. Missed a day (or five)? Don't shame yourself—just return.

Final Thoughts

Bible journaling with SOAPS isn't about perfection—it's about presence. It helps you slow down, listen to God's voice, and walk away from the Word with something real.

And when you take the final step—sharing what you've learned —you turn personal growth into communal encouragement.
