Making Space for the Still Small Voice
By Meridith Curtis

Scripture:
"While they were traveling, he entered a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who also sat at the Lord's feet and was listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, 'Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand.' The Lord answered her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice, and it will not be taken away from her.'"
— Luke 10:38–42 (CSB)
Reflection:
Martha's home was full of good intentions — the sounds of service, the bustle of preparation, the desire to honor Jesus. Yet in the midst of her serving, distraction crept in. Her hands were busy, but her heart was burdened.
Still, notice what Martha did right: she came to Jesus. Even in her frustration, she turned toward Him. And in that moment, Jesus gently realigned her focus. He didn't dismiss her effort; He redirected her attention to what truly mattered — being present with Him.
Mary chose the "one thing necessary": to sit and listen. In a noisy, hurried world, this choice still stands before us. The still small voice of God doesn't shout over our distractions; it waits for us to make space — to quiet our minds, slow our pace, and lean in to listen.
Invitation to the Heart:
What would it look like for you today to pause your doing and simply be with Jesus?
To lay down the weight of "many things" and choose the "one thing" — His presence?
Bring your distractions to Him. Let Him reorient your heart.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I bring You my distractions and my worries.
Teach me to slow down and listen for Your still small voice.
Help me to choose what is better —
to sit at Your feet, to be with You, and to be changed by Your presence.
Amen.
