Overview of Ephesus

By Meridith Curtis

Overview of Ephesus

When we open the New Testament, it's easy to imagine the story unfolding in abstract places—names on a map that feel distant from real life.

But the Bible wasn't written in abstraction.

It was written into real cities, with real politics, real economies, and real spiritual strongholds. And few cities help us see that more clearly than Ephesus.

This video is an introduction to that world.

Ephesus Was Not a Backdrop—It Was a Power Center

Ephesus was one of the most important cities in the ancient Roman world.

Located on the western coast of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), it functioned as a major port city and commercial hub. Ships came and went constantly. Goods, ideas, and people flowed through it without interruption.

That kind of connectivity made Ephesus influential—but also spiritually complex.

It was home to major Roman political presence, intense trade networks, and deeply rooted pagan religious life. Most famously, it housed the Temple of Artemis, one of the ancient wonders of the world.

In other words, Ephesus was not a quiet religious town.

It was a city of power.

Why Paul Went There

When we read about the Apostle Paul spending significant time in Ephesus, we're not just reading travel details—we're seeing strategic mission.

Ephesus functioned as a gateway city. What happened there didn't stay there. It spread.

That helps explain why the early church took root so effectively in the surrounding region of Asia Minor. Ephesus became a kind of distribution center—not just for goods, but eventually for the gospel itself.

Understanding this changes how we read Paul's ministry, the book of Acts, and even the letter to the Ephesians.

Why Geography Changes How We Read Scripture

One of the simplest but most powerful shifts in Bible study is learning to ask:

Where is this happening, and why there?

Because geography is never neutral in Scripture.

Cities shape culture. Trade routes shape movement. Political centers shape resistance. And all of that becomes the context in which God advances His kingdom.

Ephesus is a clear example of this reality. Once you see it, passages you've read many times begin to take on new depth and clarity.

Unlocking the Riches of Ephesians

If you want to go deeper into this letter, I've written Unlocking the Riches of Ephesians, an inductive Bible study on Paul's letter to the Ephesians. This study is designed to help you slow down, observe the text carefully, and uncover the depth of Paul's theological vision for the church. Rather than simply reading Ephesians for information, it guides you to engage it as formation—seeing how every passage shapes identity, community, and life in Christ within a real-world cultural context like Ephesus.
