The SOAPS Bible Study Method: A Simple Guide for Daily Devotions
By Meridith Curtis

"Time in the Word isn't just information — it's transformation."
— Kingdom Living
In a fast-paced world full of noise, distraction, and spiritual fatigue, how do we stay rooted in truth?
How do we meet with God in a way that's simple enough to practice daily, but deep enough to actually shape us?
That's where the SOAPS method comes in.
This approach to Bible reading helps us not only hear God's voice through Scripture but also respond, obey, and share it with others. It's a tool we've used in our family and community to live out the truths found in Kingdom Living, not just read them.
What is SOAPS?
S – Scripture
O – Observation
A – Application
P – Prayer
S – Share
Let's walk through each step, with biblical insight and guidance from Kingdom Living.
S — Scripture: Slow down and listen
"If we want to follow Jesus, we must let His Word be louder than the world."
— Kingdom Living
Start with a short passage — just a few verses from your daily reading plan. Write it out by hand if possible. Let the words slow you down and draw your attention.
Scripture suggestions:
-
Matthew 6:33 – "Seek first the kingdom of God…"
-
Romans 12:2 – "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind…"
-
Psalm 1:1–3 – "…like a tree planted by streams of water."
Reading God's Word is not about checking a box — it's about encountering the living God. As 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us, all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.
O — Observation: What do I see? What stands out?
Write down what you notice. Are there repeated words, commands, questions, or promises? What's the tone? Who's speaking?
"The Spirit often highlights the very phrase we'd rather skip. Pay attention there."
— Kingdom Living
Ask:
-
What is God revealing about Himself?
-
What is the main point of this passage?
-
What does it say about humanity, sin, grace, or the Kingdom?
Scripture tip: James 1:22 warns us not to be hearers only, but doers. Observation prepares us to act.
A — Application: How does this change my life today?
This is where truth meets your daily life. Ask:
-
Is there a sin to confess?
-
A promise to claim?
-
A command to obey?
-
A truth to believe more deeply?
"Kingdom living happens in ordinary kitchens, at messy tables, on tired Mondays. That's where obedience takes root."
— Kingdom Living
Try to write your application in one sentence:
"Today, I will…"
"I sense the Spirit leading me to…"
"This week, I'll live this truth by…"
Scripture support: John 14:23 – "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word…"
P — Prayer: Talk with God about it
Let your Scripture and application shape your prayer. Confess. Rejoice. Ask for help. Listen.
This is a conversation, not a performance.
"Prayer is where the battle is won. It's where we are changed before the world around us is."
— Kingdom Living
You might pray:
-
"Lord, thank you for showing me this truth…"
-
"Help me to believe…"
-
"Forgive me for…"
Scripture reminder: Philippians 4:6 – "In everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving…"
S — Share: Who will I tell or encourage with this?
This is the step we often miss — but it's essential.
"Kingdom transformation multiplies. The Word isn't just for us; it's for the world through us." —Kingdom Living
Ask:
-
Who can I encourage with this truth?
-
Is there someone who needs to hear this verse?
-
Can I start a conversation, send a message, or testify?
Scripture support:
-
Revelation 12:11 – "They overcame by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony…"
-
2 Timothy 2:2 – "Entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others also…"
