Toolbox Tuesday: The 4 Fields of Kingdom Growth — a Simple Map for the Harvest
By Meridith Curtis

If you've ever wondered where to even begin with the people around you — the neighbor, the coworker, the friend who's curious about God — today's Toolbox Tuesday tool gives you a map.
It's called the 4 Fields of Kingdom Growth, and it comes straight from the lips of Jesus.
Before we dive in, remember the goal of this series. Every tool we feature has to be three things:
Simple. Biblical. Reproducible.
The 4 Fields passes all three tests — because Jesus is the one who drew the picture.
Where the 4 Fields Come From
In Mark 4:26–29, Jesus tells a short parable:
"The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come."
Disciple-makers have learned to draw that parable as four fields — four stages of growth that every person (and every people group) moves through on the way to Jesus and multiplication:
1. Empty Field — people who haven't heard yet.
2. Seeded Field — people who have heard the gospel.
3. Growing Field — new believers learning to follow and obey Jesus.
4. Harvest Field — mature disciples, gathered and multiplying.
Draw four squares, label them, and you can hold the whole strategy of Jesus in your pocket. That's not an exaggeration — this one picture has been used to train church planters all over the world.
Here's why it matters so much: the 4 Fields doesn't just tell you what to do. It tells you what to do next — with each person, in each place, at each stage.
Field 1: The Empty Field — Entry
Every harvest starts in an empty field. Before anyone can believe, someone has to go.
Jesus said it plainly: "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest" (Luke 10:2).
The practical work of an empty field is entry — prayerfully going to where people are and finding the people God has already prepared. In Luke 10, Jesus sent His followers into towns searching for a "person of peace": someone open, welcoming, and influential among their own people.
Your empty field might be the apartment complex down the street, the break room at work, the sideline at your kid's soccer game. The nations really have gathered in Nashville — and most of them have never once had a spiritual conversation with a believer.
Next step for an empty field: pray by name, go, and look for the person of peace God has prepared.
Field 2: The Seeded Field — Gospel
A seeded field has heard the good news. The sower's job here is not to argue or pressure — it's to sow generously and clearly.
Share the gospel in a way your listener can understand and repeat. The Three Circles is a perfect tool here — God's design, our brokenness, and God's rescue in Jesus. (We covered it in our first Toolbox Tuesday — read it here.)
Then keep sowing. "He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how." Kingdom growth is God's job. Sowing is ours.
Next step for a seeded field: share the gospel clearly, and keep the conversation going.
Field 3: The Growing Field — Discipleship
When someone says yes to Jesus, the seed has sprouted — and now the field needs watering, not harvesting.
Paul described this stage perfectly: "I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth" (1 Corinthians 3:6).
Growing a new believer looks like meeting regularly to read the Bible together, learn to obey Jesus' commands, and practice the rhythms of abiding. A Discovery Bible Study or a 3/3rds group is ideal here — simple, biblical, reproducible patterns that a brand-new believer can lead almost immediately.
The goal of the growing field is never just knowledge. It's obedience. New believers learn to hear God's Word and do what it says — and the first mark of growth is that they start sharing with someone else.
Next step for a growing field: read, obey, and practice together.
Field 4: The Harvest Field — Multiplication
The harvest field is where multiplication happens: believers who make believers, groups that start groups, churches that plant churches.
This is the point of the whole picture. Remember the parable's ending — "when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come." The harvest isn't the end of the story; it's the beginning of the next sowing. Harvested fields produce seed for more fields.
In the harvest field, mature disciples gather with other believers, train others in everything they've learned, and are sent into new empty fields. The cycle starts again.
That's the difference between addition and multiplication. Addition counts decisions; multiplication releases disciplemakers.
Next step for a harvest field: gather, train, and send.
Why This One Picture Changes Everything
Here's what the 4 Fields does for ordinary believers:
It removes the mystery. You always know what step comes next for each person you love.
It removes the pressure. Growth is God's work — yours is faithful sowing, watering, and harvesting at the right stage.
It keeps you moving. No more frozen at "where do I even start?" Look at the field. Take the next step.
And it works everywhere — a dorm, a cul-de-sac, a refugee apartment, a factory floor, a village on the other side of the world. Anything that fits on a napkin can cross any border.
This Week's Toolbox Tuesday Challenge
1. PRAY — Draw the four fields on a piece of paper. Ask God to show you who is in each of yours.
2. MAP — Write actual names into the fields — the friends who haven't heard, the ones who have, the new believers, the growing disciples.
3. STEP — For one person in each field, take this week's next step: pray and go, share the gospel, start reading the Bible together, or train and release.
4. MULTIPLY — Teach the 4 Fields to one other believer. If they can draw it, they can use it.
And if you want a beautiful reminder to carry with you, our friends at Sentones print a 4 Fields of Kingdom Growth sticker — perfect for a notebook, water bottle, or laptop lid. Every glance is a nudge: who's in your fields, and what's your next step?
